Wildlife Management Slide Show created by the USFS in 1938. Transcribed from original program. 30..A jackrabbit, or as it should be properly called jack hare, in winter pelage. The only true rabbit in the Rocky Mountains regions is the cottontail, while the Snowshoe and Jackrabbit are hares. Hares are big long eared, long legged rabbit-like animals capable of running at great speed for long distances; the young are born fully developed with their eyes open. The nest is a form which is merely a cavity or pocket scratched out by the female. A rabbit is a small, short-eared, fast runner for short distances and usually lives in a burrow. The young are practically hairless, helpless, and with eyes closed at birth; they are borne in the burrow in a nest lined with grass and fur from the breast of the mother.
