The only true rabbit in the Rocky Mountains regions is the cottontail, while the Snowshoe and Jackrabbit are hares. Hares are big long eared, long legged rabbit-like animals capable of running at great speed for long distances; the young are born fully developed with their eyes open. The nest is a form which is merely a cavity or pocket scratched out by the female. A rabbit si small, short-eared, a fast runner for a short distance and usually lives in a burrow. The young are practically hairless, helpless, and with eyes closed at birth; they are borne in the burrow in a nest lined with grass and fur from the breast of the mother |
