Hances Highway, Rainier National Forest, Washington...As visitors travel though the National Forests, they will find much pleasure in unexpected sights. Not only will they enjoy the unusual and beautiful scenery, but they will be interested in the vast resources which they may be seeing for the first time. They will marvel at the sight of gigantic logs and other forest products going out to be made into homes and to be used in the construction of bridged, ships, railroads, telephone and telegraph lines, and thousands of other necessary things.. There will be keen excitement in tracing some stream to its headwaters and a new understanding will be gained of the way in which the forest influences streamflow and water supply...Bands of sheep and herds of cattle enliven the landscape, and looking at them one appreciates how the forest range helps to supply us with wool, meat, and leather...A brush area may not at first attract the visitor, but if he will look beneath the brush he will find frequently that it is acting as a nurse crop and taking care of the tine tree seedlings which are growing there...Marching up and down the hills are crops of sturdy young trees, already giving promise of the forests they will make in the future. On the other hand, burned land gives the visitor no pleasure. Here is a bleak desolation and a great waste of material which would have added much to the wealth of the country. When such an area is seen, it is well to remember that is was probably caused by the carelessness of some smoker, camper or other forest user.. |
