The Forest Service has defined such and area as, a tract of Federally owned land set aside to be kept in as near its natural primitive condition as is physically and economically feasible, in the interests of public education, research, and recreation. Only necessary protective trails give access to such areas, and rude shelters are the only structures. There are 39 Primitive Areas already established on National Forests in the West, distributed in 10 different States and including a total of 6.5 million acres...24. A Primitive Area along the crest of the Sierra Nevada in the Inyo, Sequoia, and Sierra National Forests, California. To preserve in their primitive state typical mountain areas of California, the Forest Service has set aside 761,790 acres of the high Sierra country as a Primitive Area. This area is in the Inyo, Sierra, and Sequoia National Forests. |
