Supervisors, Rangers, and other Forest officers carry on the work of managing and protecting the National Forest resources and assist the public in making use of these resources. Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work. 54. Forest Ranger issuing a camp fire permits for use on the Chelan National Forest, Washington. On forests where the fire hazard is great during the summer months, permits to build camp fires may be required. These are issued by Forest officers or other persons deputized by the Forest Service, at points convenient to the roads leading into the Forest. |
