Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work...56. Fire lookout tower on the Cibola National Forest, New Mexico. During the danger season, the main attention of the Forest Supervisors and Rangers is devoted to preventing fires and to catching while still small those that do start. There are lookout towers on high points and other places commanding extensive views on all National Forests. In his lofty tower, the lookout keeps watch for the danger signal smoke. A telephone connects each tower with the nearest ranger stations, so that information can be quickly passed on to the Supervisor and his fire fighters. |
