Title: BALD LAND AT HEAD OF DEER CREEK
Description: Magic Lantern Slides from a 1938 USFS slide show of National Forest Playgrounds. Keyword “MLA” to see all images and original transcript from all 60 images.

Image Description from original transcript: 4. Every Forest Region Offers Scenes of Interest and Beauty..Northern Forest Region – Region 1..Forest meadow where livestock range. Pike National Forest, Colorado. The Northern Forest Region includes 20 National Forest- 6 in Idaho, 13 in Montana, and 1 in Washington with a total area of 21,000,000 acres. The regional Forester has his headquarters at Missoula, Montana. The traveler through this Region finds himself on the very backbone of the country, gigantic vertebrae of forested mountain ranges lying along the Continental Divide. This is a land where lakes nestle at the feet of pinnacles which pierce the skyline, where the primeval forest still holds dominion, where great rivers rise, where the wilderness harbors wild life in abundance, and where pleasant valleys and meadows afford summer pasturage for millions of cattle and sheep. Here is found the finest white pine in the world..Elk, deer, bear, and other big game animals roam the land and fish abound in the waters. The Great Sun River elk herd, numbering nearly 5,000 at the last census, is at home on the Lolo National Forest, Montana..Much of this region is accessible only by trail, but roads and highways cross or touch many of its Forest, and in each and all of the twenty may be found opportunities for recreation and sport...This region is of much historic interest. IT was an Indian hunting ground. Lewis and Clark passed this way in their exploring expeditions; the Gold Rush swept over it in the fifties; mining towns build its first prosperity; no less a gig-game hunter than Theodore Roosevelt found sport here. A memorial to this great Nature lover crowns Marias Pass on the Lewis and Clark National Forest, Montana..
