San Bernardino National Forest, CA..The California Forest Region has 18 National Forests 17 in California and 1 in Nevada, with a combined area of 19.5 million acres. The National Forests of California have within their boundaries most of the forest and watersheds of the Sierra Nevada and Coast Range in the central and northern portions of the State and of the Sierra Madre and other mountains in southern California. The Regional forester has his headquarters at San Francisco...The timber resources protected by the United States Forest Service in California amount to 102,000,000,000 board feet, valued at $255,000,000. From 350,000,000 to 400,000,000 board feet are cut annually under sales to operators, and wood-using industries. More than 100,000 cattle and horses and 400,000 sheep and goats graze on the forest ranges of California. Streams rising in the mountains of this Forest Region furnish water for hydro-electric power plants with a capacity of more than 2,000,000 ho4rsepower, and for irrigation of many hundred thousand acres of agricultural land. Over 120 cities and towns, with a total population of 3,000,000, are dependent on these Forests for their domestic and municipal water supply...The National forests of California Region contain many scenic areas of note, among which are Mount Whitney and Mount Shasta, Lake Tahoe, Rim of the World Drive, Laguna Recreation Area, Feather River Canyon, and the vast High Sierra Country. Devils Post Pile and Modoc Alava Beds National Monuments are outstanding attractions, and there are 19 Primitive Areas within the National Forests of the Region. Other points of interest are Mount Wilson Observ Observatory in the Angeles National forest, and the Sanctuary of the Pines in Santa Barbara National Forest...A dozen or more of the main highways of the West traverse this Region. The hunter, the fisherman, the camera artist, and the bird and animal lover will find in the National Forests of California many and varied objects o interest and study. |
