Wild life- game animals, birds, and fish in addition to its own prior claim to the woods and waters, adds materially to the enjoyment of the National Forests by humans. Game protection is therefore one of the regular activities of field officers of the United States Forest Service. Cooperation with the State and local authorities in enforcing the game laws has contributed in no small degree toward making the National Forests more attractive to visitors and toward conserving one of their valuable resources. Special acts of Congress have designated a number of game refuges, situated wholly or in part within National Forests, for the protection of wild life...49. Wild ducks on Lost Lake, Wichita National Forest and Game Preserve, Oklahoma. The Wichita Game Preserve includes more than 60,000 acres in the Wichita National forest, Oklahoma. It abounds n native bird life. The Wichita National Forest is a very popular resort for recreationists. There are only eight free forest camps within it, but the number of its visitors each year is greater than the number visiting public campgrounds in any other Forest in the Rocky Mountain Region. In scenic value, also, the Wichita National Forest ranks high among the national Forests of the country. |
