Image Description from original transcript: Primitive Areas on the National Forests..Establishment of the Primitive Areas is relatively new in the National forest administration. The Forest Service has defined such and area as, a tract of Federally owned land set aside to be kept in as near its natural primitive condition as is physically and economically feasible, in the interests of public education, research, and recreation. Only necessary protective trails give access to such areas, and rude shelters are the only structures. There are 39 Primitive Areas already established on National Forests in the West, distributed in 10 different States and including a total of 6.5 million acres...23. Climbing Mount Hood on a July day. Mount Hood Primitive Area, Oregon. The high country about Mount Hood to the north and west of the summit is preserved in its natural condition as the Mount Hood Primitive Area. Mountain climbing clubs from Portland make the ascent frequently with parties numbering as high as 100 or more. The American Legion, the Mazamas, and Crag Rates make the ascent as an annual event. |
