Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work. 58. Bald Mountain Fire, Selway National Forest, Idaho. Fire is an ever present danger on the National Forests. A small fire may spread into a conflagration. A fire may start in a remote region and reach vast proportions before fire-fighters can get to the scene. By far the best plan, therefore, is to prevent fire rather to depend upon fighting them once they start. Among the chief causes of fire are lightening, smoking, incediarism, carelessness of campers, railroads, brush burning, and lumbering operations. About 90 per cent of the forest fires of known causes are caused by human agencies. IT is therefore largely up to the camper, the smoker, the railroad company, the brush burner, and the logger to keep fire out of the forest. |
