Tongass National Forest...The Alaska Region is very different from the Forest Regions in Continental United States. It contains only two Forest The Tongass and the Chugach, lying like a tattered ribbon of land 600 miles long from the southern tip of the Territory to within sight of Mount McKinley. However, these two Forests have larger areas than any other National Forest in the United States the Tongass, with 16.5 million acres, and the Chugach with nearly 5 million. These Forests are mostly hemlock, with spruce next in importance, with a small amount of western red cedar, and other species. They are of immense importance to Alaska because they cover a region the best use of which is timber projection, the land having little agricultural value. The Regional Forester has headquarters at Juneau.. |
