Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work...57. Putting in a fire line with rakes on the Lincoln National Forest, New Mexico. When a fire is reported, it is the rangers business to put it out. He has tools always ready at the Ranger Station, and in special places at convenient points throughout the Forest. FI the fire grows so large that the rangers organization cannot take care of it, his superior, the Forest Supervisor, takes charge and, in accordance with plans which have been made in advance, he sends in on short notice experienced fire fighters, tools, equipment, and food. Firefighting costs the Federal Government large sums of money every year. In addition, there is great loss of wealth through the burning up of mature forests, the killing of young trees, the destruction of forest soil, the drying up of streams, and the impairment of the recreational value of the forests. |
