Douglas fir is the most important tree species. In production, it is the rival of southern pine...The National Forests of this Region are summer playgrounds for the people of the valleys. There are several well known mountain peaks in this Region which afford matchless scenery; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, Mount Baker, and Mount Shuksan...Mount Olympus, Washing, on the Olympic National Forest, is a National Monument and the summer range and breeding ground of the famous Olympic elk found nowhere else in the country. Oregon Caves is another National Monument of this Region. There are seven Primitive Areas within the Region, four in Oregon, and three in Washington...Winter sports on the Mont Hood are becoming more and more popular. The streams and lakes of the Forests abound in fish, and there is good hunting for deer and bear and other big game. Scenic highways and good roads make this Region the Mecca of great numbers of tourists and other vacationists. |
