Title: INTO THE HEART OF THE HILLS PARKERSBURG PIKE.
Description: Magic Lantern Slides from a 1938 USFS slide show of National Forest Playgrounds. Keyword “MLA” to see all images and original transcript from all 60 images.

Image Description from original transcript: Every Forest Region Offers Scenes of Interest and Beauty..10. Eastern Forest Region – Region 7. Into the heart of the hills. Parkersburg Pike, George Washington National Forest, Virginia. The Eastern Forest Region includes 17 National Forests in 15 States, and the Luquillo National forest in Puerto Rico. In addition, there are in three other States four areas of forest land purchased by the Government to be managed in the future as National Forests. The total area of National Forest land in this Region is 4.5 million acres, scattered over the White Mountains, along the Appalachians from Pennsylvania to Alabama, on the Ozarks, and in the piney woods of Florida. The Regional Forester has a headquarters at Washington, D.C.

Timber production and protection of headwaters of navigable streams are the main objects of the establishment of these Forests by purchase under the Acts of Congress. Situated as most of them are on mountain ranges, as, for instance, the White Mountain and the Ozark National Forests, and easily reached as they all are by highways and other good roads, these Eastern Forests are the natural playgrounds of thousands of people every year.

Within these National Forests is to be found some of the most picturesque scenery of the East. Here are the highest peaks east of the Mississippi River, extensive high plateaus, and lower ranges of rolling hills. Here also, are mountain books and lakes, crystal clear and always cold; and larger streams and rivers, forest-cradled, seeking the sea. There are nine National Game Refuges in Region 7, five in Arkansas, one in North Carolina, one in Tennessee, one in Georgia, and one in Florida.
