Supervisors, Rangers, and other Forest officers carry on the work of managing and protecting the National Forest resources and assist the public in making use of these resources. Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work. 59. The protected forest at its best. Mature white pine and hemlock on the Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania. Sometimes in traveling through the forest, one finds stands of perfect timber with many generations of younger trees coming in, under perfect forest conditions. Often there is no evidence that fire has ever run through the trees. As far as the eye can see the trunks are straight and clean, without a wound or scar. When the visitor to a National Forest looks upon such trees, their size, their beauty, and their age inspire him with awe and a sense of responsibility for living things of so much beauty and value. And if he is sufficiently awakened he will never the guilty of a careless or thoughtless act which will mutilate the forest and rob future generations of the benefits and pleasures which it affords. |
