Title: VIDEO: Battle of the Beetles
Description: This 1950's film is about a battle in Colorado with a beetle species closely related to mountain pine beetle, but decidedly different in biology and impact --- the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis. Until the recent mountain pine beetle episode in Canada, the 1941-1952 spruce beetle episode in Colorado and southern Wyoming was considered the largest forest insect epidemic known to have occurred in western North America.

On another note, as shown in the video: Make sure, should you find one of those 5-gallon "Jeep cans" out in the forest here or elsewhere in the West, that you do not open it…

Battle of the Beetles

You haven't seen it all until you peek at this Department of Agriculture masterpiece on the days when DDT and chemicals too mean to clean ruled the forest. This unique documentary of early attempts to stop bark beetles in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains is sobering and entertaining. Two thumbs up.
