Inyan Kara: The Sacred Mountain of the Sundance

Forest Ranger Steve Kozel narrates this short piece on Inyan Kara (Inyan Kaga), the sacred mountain where te Lakota and Cheyenne gather colored stones for the Sundances held annually around Indian Country in three States. This mountain is the same geologic formation as Devil's Tower a few miles to the northwest, but with less dramatic erosion to tear away the uplifting rock surrounding the tall volcanic crystals. I was here tat George Armstrong Custer first entered the Black Hills, Paha Sapa, in 1874 with his 7t Calvary, and it was here that Crazy Horse buried his few dead after the Custer Fight in 1876, the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
