OSPREY (Pandion Haliaetus). Between the late 1880s and 1990, Ospreys were not known to nest in South Dakota. Since 1990, a pair has nested each year near Pactola Reservoir in Pennington County. By 2002, four active nests were reported in Custer, Lawrence, and Pennington counties (Stockade Lake, Pilot knob, and Hill City). Ospreys banded in Idaho and Washington have been recovered in South Dakota. The record for Osprey longevity is 26 years, 2 months. Unlike most other fish-eating birds, Ospreys forage by diving feet-first into water.
