Rangers supervise timber sales on the National Forests, also grazing, and other uses of the Forests. They help to build roads, trails, bridges, telephone lines, and other improvements including campground conveniences. A large part of their time is necessarily devoted to the protection of the forest from fire and to fighting fires when they occur. Physical endurance is necessary to the success of the Ranger, because of the heavy labor and exposure involved in this work. 52. The Rangers advice is valuable to the camper. Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia. The Ranger likes to know who is camping on his Forest. When he can, he visits the camps. His friendly advice concerning sanitation and care with fire is valuable to the forest visitor.
